Jay Kuo is a composer, lyricist and two-time Tony winning Broadway producer. He is an appellate lawyer, the CEO of The Social Edge, the author of The Status Kuo, and the Chair-elect of the Human Rights Campaign. Kuo tells how Colorado governor Ralph Carr stood firm in defense of Japanese Americans during World War II internment, even as it cost him his political career.

This was a true stain on the American government and is a piece of history that was never to taught to me, as an east coast kid. I finally learned about this when I was a teacher and had my students read Farewell to Manzanar. And now our lack of historic knowledge is leading to a replication of the horror, just with another people group. Shame on America.
Thank you for sharing this important piece of our American history. It was a time of panic and fear that led to the vile discrimination against members of our communities. A difficult and painful lesson that should be remembered especially with the attitudes towards and actions against all immigrants today.
