It's hard to learn, isn't it? I like your phrase, 'sat with me'.. yes. I left Florida in the late '50's ' and I left the south in the mid-'70's. But I carry that awareness forever on my heart.
I thought that was the town Zora Neale Hurston lived in... I grew up in Florida, and of course, I never knew that 'black' people were even capable of having a town of their own.
Then I learned about their towns and the white destruction of those towns...
