I would add the reason Napoleon decided to sell French holdings in North America to the new nation was because of the successful slave revolt in Haiti. America owes so much to the people of Haiti - yet this regime is taking away TPS.
And America owes so much to all immigrants as well as the indigenous populations that were here for thousands of years before us. More crimes by the current administration against the vast number of different populations who reside here does not and will not make up for the injuries we have inflicted against anyone who is not white Anglo-Saxon. Such injuries include not only ICE and its current attacks on peaceful, contributing groups, but also by its cuts to social programs and government services that are affecting so many persons of all races/ethnicities needing assistance, not punishment.
I am reminded that many others in later years have recreated this epic trek by retracing Clark and Lewis' route ( including my family in a mid 1980s Saturn 😂). If this nation ever does return to some better state than it is right now, I may try it again to feel the immense losses for indigenous peoples as well as the immense gains. Here is to hoping we heal well and quickly.
